Over lunch with two friends, both exclaimed frustration for the impending afternoon they had ahead of them: Christmas shopping. Each had somewhere in the neighbourhood of 40 presents to purchase, for people they felt obligated to buy for, even some individuals they expressed disdain for.
Not only is this incredibly wasteful, but it's painfully expensive. I have been guilty of this expectation at a certain point in my life, too. It wasn't unusual for me to spend upwards of thousands of dollars for people I didn't necessarily know all that well (in-laws, distant cousins), all because I felt I "had to".
Over the years, I've moved away from buying "stuff", encouraging my partner and immediate family to gift one another with experiences or charitable donations instead of material things that'll most likely end up in the landfill.
Here are some ideas to consider before you head to the pandemonium of your local mall this holiday season!
1. Plan an outing
An annual tradition my family and I always look forward to: the whimsical outdoor plays at Caravan Theatre in Armstrong.
Every Christmas, they put on family friendly acts, hosted on their farm, carting guests around on horse drawn sleigh. It's absolutely ethereal, and akin to feeling like you might be in a real life snow globe. I'll never forget how magical my first visit was.

2. Make a photobook
It's easier than ever to make scrapbooks or calendars with digital software.
Simply drag and drop snaps from social media into eye pleasing templates.
Make a photo book in a matter of minutes that'll ship right to your door.
This is an especially great gift for grandparents, who love having photos of their grandkids on hand to share with friends.
3. Volunteer
Take the whole family and head to your local soup kitchen. You'll bond over doing something worthwhile and create memories in the process.
4. Cook an elaborate meal
Pick a few fun recipes here and put together a meal that's lovingly cooked for your family.
Take it one step further with wine pairings, for inspiration visit one of our earlier articles here.
Print your menu on card stock for an added touch.
5. Make something
Personalize a sweater (extra points if it's second hand!) with a monogrammed patch; blend sweet almond and jojoba oil to make a DIY moisturizer/beard oil/makeup remover; hollow out an old book to create a "secret" storage spot for keys, wallet or other treasures; write a list of "the top 10 things" you love about someone.
How are you going to be more mindful this Christmas season?
