With a powerful combination of athleticism and female prowess, the women of Femme Fatale are bringing sexy back in a way that celebrates the female body, as well as inspiring self-confidence.

Created by Tina Joslin, owner of Kelowna’s Oranj Fitness, Femme Fatale is a local burlesque-inspired dance troupe that aims to break down negative boundaries surrounding femininity, the female body, and sexuality one show at a time.

“The opportunity to perform and be on stage is something that I felt wasn’t available to adults in Kelowna when I started Femme Fatale,” explained Joslin.

“We began with just nine women in a studio and it has evolved into a large stage production with up to 55 members performing at sold out shows.”

Burlesque is sometimes characterized as overtly sexual and while a Femme Fatale performance is certainly sexy, the show is geared towards many demographics.

“Getting people over the stigma of what burlesque brings can be a challenge,” said Joslin. "Although, the community has been very supportive and willing to think outside of the box, that dancing in your underwear can be positive and empowering."

Joslin and the women from Femme Fatale put on a variety of productions that will include a production in Sapphires main room, as well as appearances at Centre of Gravity and Splendor in the Grass.

“Femme Fatale does a 16-week program where we rehearse for two hours a week and then leading up to a big show we will have a few other weekend rehearsals,” said Joslin.

“The shows are always a highlight, its empowering for everyone involved when the girls feel confident on stage and can shake it in a positive environment. It builds a sisterhood by the time we finish a successful show.”
