A strong wind alert has been issued for Vancouver Island and the southwestern mainland.

Environment Canada said winds will rise to between 70 and 80 km/h, gusting from 90 to 110, as a consequence of an “intense front” crossing the south coast on Saturday.

The warning affects Greater Victoria, western Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Southern Gulf Islands.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur,” Environment Canada explained.  

“High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.”
