West Shore RCMP say they’ve noticed an uptick in uninsured vehicles on the road, prompting a warning about the potential consequences.

The department said that in July 2023, the traffic unit issued 65 tickets for driving without vehicle insurance. In July 2022, officers issued a total of 21 tickets to uninsured drivers.

“Throughout the past year we have seen a steady increase in the number of vehicles on the roadway that do not have vehicle insurance,” said the department. “Police believe this is partly due to licence plate validation decals no longer being required as of May 2022.”

We also know that inflation is making things more expensive for Canadians. 

According to the Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index, passenger vehicle insurance premiums rose 5.4% for June, after a 3.1% increase in May. The index recorded a 0.5% monthly increase in June 2023 compared with a 1.7% monthly decline in June 2022.

If you are caught uninsured, you could be fined $598 and your vehicle can be towed. 

However, being involved in a collision when your vehicle is uninsured is bound to be even more costly. 

“This could result in you being sued and held liable for damages,” said the RCMP. 

“We strongly encourage motorists to ensure they have the proper insurance on their vehicles. You can further protect yourself by making sure you have uninsured motorist coverage.”
