BC Wildfire Service has documented two new wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre on Thursday evening.

According to BCWS information officer Madison Smith, two initial attack crews, comprised of three firefighters each, and a response officer attended a 0.4-hectare wildfire south of Ashcroft at about 5 pm. 

Crews have kept the fire, called the Basque Railway Crossing fire, at bay and it is now considered "being held," meaning that the fire is not likely to spread under current weather conditions.

A second wildfire sparked northeast of Vernon, near Kedleston at 5:30 pm.

Smith said the 0.8-hectare fire was a slash pile, which is left over lumber and other residue left by industrial or logging activities, that was on fire. One initial attack crew responded and was able to suppress the fire. It is now being held. 

No fires pose any risks to the surrounding area.
