I’ve been a landscape photographer here in the Okanagan for about 3 years and specialize in capturing scenery of a more dramatic nature. I’m always on the hunt for big storm clouds and lighting that makes you feel like you’re in a scene from lord of the rings.
Why do you use Instagram?
I use it because it’s the “in thing” duh… Of course I’m kidding. Instragram has mainly been a place where I can display my photographs and experiences in a user friendly way. It’s quicker and easier to navigate than most other photography/portfolio types of social media allowing me to share my photographs easily and find other photographers to collaborate with.
What will people see on your feed?
I’m fairly picky with what I post. Occasionally I might post a promotional post or something but most of the time you can bet your bottom dollar that you will be seeing a big epic landscape shot full of colour and impact.
Does your page have a specific style?
Well picking on the words of the last question, my style mainly consists of a fine balance between realism, colour, tones, and mood. I’m starting to include people a lot more in my photographs to create that sense of scale and depth, and my editing has usually always been about pushing the photograph to that fine point of where realism meets wonder and mystery.
Favourite Instagrammers to follow?
That’s a toughy, as I have lots of big landscape photographers I follow, but hey I also follow a lot of amazing locals so I’m going to give this list to them!
@sndon – yeah, he posts some pretty epic shots and always seems to be out adventuring somewhere!
@mattfphotography – I’m always amazed by the creative compositions this guy can pull, and not only that but the whole range of stuff he shoots is incredible
@douglas_drouin_photography – love his landscapes and the moods implemented into them
@drewdphotos – I’d call this guy master of the night sky, do I need say more?
@ viktoriahaack – She is an inspirational landscape photographer who shoots a lot in the rockies, an absolute must for this list!
Why do you follow KelownaNow?
I follow Kelownanow because there content is killer! I’ve also made lots of connections through seeings other people's photographs and having my own photographs shared. It’s truly a great community of people and it’s so great seeing what other instagrammers are up to!
How do you decide on your location for shoots?
Sometimes you get this itch, you look outside and see the clouds piling up and the sky dwelling with darkness, you know it’s go time. Often my shoots are quite spontaneous as is the weather, being able to determine if the clouds are going to dance for you or if there are going simply float away is a seriously undermined skill in this art. The main factors on deciding a location are
A. Time; the more time I got the more flexibility I got and usually I’ll try somemwhere new or somewhere far if time is plentiful (RARE OCCURRENCE)
B. Time of day; If I’m shooting in the morning or if I’m shooting in the evening with make a huge difference in what location I choose, especially for night shooting.
C. Weather; This play a big role, since where the weather is relative to my location matters, also the types of lighting it produces is huge, as certain lighting works much better for certain locations.
So basically I pile those three factors on top of each other and with a well educated guess I make my decision!
Biggest Instagram moment?
I don’t really have one moment that dominates the rest, It’s mainly just been a steady increase in shares and followings through my instagram, and meeting new people to me is always a fun and exciting moment.
