Labour Day long weekend tends to be bittersweet. The beginning of September brings with it the heavy-hearted knowledge that summer is coming to an end, but also offers three whole days of freedom to soak it all up before it’s over.
If you’re an end-of-summer-griever, feel free to linger in the denial stage for a few more days, because the Westside still has lots of summer left to offer!
Hit the beach
Make the most of the remaining sunny days with an afternoon at the beach! Pack a floatie, some fun games, your favourite snacks and invite some friends for a day on the lake.
Pritchard Park on the Westside is the perfect place for a beach day, complete with a playground, washrooms, picnic tables and a nice, grassy area for lounging. Catch some rays before jumping into the water to cool off, or relax in the shade with your favourite book.
Visit Paynter’s Fruit Market
Take a drive down the Westside Farm Loop and visit Paynter’s Fruit Market to pick your own perfectly in-season peaches and pears!
Stop at all of the farms and fruit stands that catch your interest along the way and load up on fresh summer produce while it lasts. It’ll make the perfect addition to that final BBQ of the season.
Stock up on your favourite summer wines
The Westside Wine Trail had an especially busy season this year, so this is your chance to stock up on your favourite summer wines before they run out.
Not sure where to start? Visit the Indigenous World Winery that just opened last year for a taste of high quality wine and cuisine inspired by Indigenous culture, or take a trip to Ciao Bella Winery for “a taste of Italy in the Okanagan”.
Go mini-putting
Mini-putting at 19 Greens on the Westside is fun for everyone, whether you’re an avid golfer or totally inexperienced. The 18 hole natural grass course is a blast with a group of friends, and there’s even a smaller astro turf course that is perfect for families.
The course is open late, so you can even enjoy night golfing under the stars–an awesome idea for a creative date night!
Visit the museum
“Summer brain” is real. Even for those of us who have continued working throughout the past few months, it’s tough not to go into a bit of a vacation-mode during summertime in the Okanagan. All of the little weekend getaways, days lazing by the beach and socializing with friends can catch up to you after awhile!
Once you’ve had your weekend’s fill of the great outdoors, why not retrain your brain with a visit to one or both of the impressive museums on the Westside? Locally-run, the Westbank Museum is sure to leave you with lots of interesting information about the history of the Westside region, and the Sncewips Heritage Museum is filled with artefacts and art exhibits to educate visitors about First Nations culture.
We hope you can end off summer with a bang with some of these fun activities on the Westside! How are you planning to spend your Labour Day long weekend?
