An RCMP officer from Keremeos proved that our police do more than keep our streets safe after saving a young moose and reuniting it with its mother.

According to the RCMP, on Nov. 7, 2019 at 6 p.m., Cst. Matthew Groen was called to assist after the public reported a young moose had caught its leg in a barbed wire fence on Highway 3A, north of Ollala.

Cst. Groen arrived and bystanders told him they believed the young moose’s mother was nearby and was reluctant to move along without the calf. 

He returned to the detachment to find bolt cutters to cut the wire and successfully freed the wild animal, which was seen running back into the bush. 

“These are the kinds of good news stories the public rarely hears about,” says Cst. James Grandy. 

“Officers working in remote detachments often have to use their ingenuity to problem solve unique situations on their own.”
