Say hello to Zari, the newest member of the Sesame Street family.

The young female character will be joining Bagch-e-Simsim, the local Afghan co-production for the fifth season. Sesame Garden has the highest viewership among the children’s TV shows in Afghanistan at 86 per cent.

Within the 26 newly filmed episodes Zari will speak about girls’ empowerment, national identity, physical health and much more.

Sesame Street has made Zari’s clothing especially for her and she will soon become the perfect role model for many children. The brightly dressed Zari is confident, sweet, active, smart and ambitious.

“Zari will teach boys and girls about the importance of celebrating one another. With her help, we further our mission of helping kids grow smarter, stronger, and kinder,” Sesame Workshop explained in a Facebook post.

Back in October, Sesame Street added Julia, a character with Autism to the show. Sesame Street started a new nationwide initiative called Sesame Street and Autism, See Amazing in all Children, which has been a complete success.
