Kamloops experienced quite the hot May, but it seems like that heat could stick around for the Summer. 

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Matt MacDonald, this May was the seventh hottest on record, only slightly cooler than last year's record-breaking May. May 2019 saw an average temperature of 16.9 degrees while May 2018 saw an average of 18.2 degrees. 

"This was the seventh hottest May on record, and records in Kamloops go all the way back to 1893," said MacDonald. "May 2018 was the hottest May on record." 

Macdonald explained that showers could be on the way for this week but after that, the weather could get hot.  

"We're seeing a change in the weather pattern as we speak here. It's shifting to a cooler weather pattern so we should get five to 10 millimetres in the South-Thompson between here and Saturday. Then it returns to a dry and hot pattern again from Sunday onwards."

MacDonald mentioned that if hot weather continues like this, it could be an issue for wildfire season. 

"If we look at the previous months, spring as a whole, which we define Spring as March, April and May, we've only seen 70% of normal rainfall, so we're entering the summer with a deficit… We are getting a little help in the next few days, but I don't think it will be enough to bring us back up to a normal amount so we're entering the summer-season with drier-than-normal conditions and that's one of the ingredients for an active wildfire season."

MacDonald went on to say that the sea-service temperatures are high right now, which could cause a warmer than normal summer. 

"Sea-service temperatures in the Pacific Ocean are warmer than normal, and another contributing factor is the record-low ice in the arctic."
