I swear, last night was a movie.
Plenty of Kelowna residents will likely be whispering that classic lyric once Femme Fatale is finished with Sapphire.
Kelowna’s top burlesque troop has been representing empowerment through movement in the city for years and now the group is putting the final touches on its biggest show to date.
Femme Fatale will present "A Night at the Cinema" for two nights at Sapphire Nightclub in downtown Kelowna this week.
The two shows will take place on Thursday, Jan. 11 with showtime at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, Jan 12. with showtime at 8:30 p.m.
"This is our 9th show and it was time to move into a bigger venue," said Femme Fatale Founder Tina Mindl. "With all of our previous shows selling out, or overselling, Sapphire's lounge we decided to take our performance to the main room so we can deliver our performance on a bigger stage and to more people."
Tina Mandl is the owner of Oranj Fitness in Kelowna and she’s also the creator of local burlesque dance studio, Femme Fatale.
Established in January of 2014, one of Femme Fatale's objectives is to break down negative boundaries surrounding femininity, the female body, and sexuality one show at a time.
As Mandl explained, Women are constantly striving to mold themselves into one standard image of beauty, but at Femme Fatale, burlesque dancing allows women to move away from societal pressures of conformity and really just be themselves.
“Femme Fatale teaches women that they are beautiful, simple as that,” said Mandl. “We not only teach performance and dance training for all levels, but how to exude confidence in all aspects of life.
Having a flair for the theatrical, Mandl created her own burlesque dance studio as a means of providing an outlet for women to discover confidence within themselves, all the while working in some fun fitness."
The studio started out with only nine women on the Femme Fatale stage, but has since evolved into a large production that incorporates jazz, hip-hop, and burlesque for an evening of spectacular dancing.
Welcomed without judgement, beginners moving up to experienced dancers are invited to take to the Femme Fatale stage.
“Everyone is welcome regardless of age, size or shape,” added Mandl. “There's absolutely no shame and I want everyone to feel comfortable.”
