Kamloops residents should get ready for the heat as close-to record-breaking temperatures are on the horizon. 

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist, the end of the week could see temperatures as high as 30 degrees. 

"It's close but I don't know if it is going to be quite enough, we will have to see," said Lundquist. "For example, for the 10th, we are forecasting Friday at 30 degrees. The record-high for the 10th is 32 and for the 9th is 32 and change, and on the 8th is 32." 

Lundquist explained that once we pass this week, temperature records get as hot as 36 degrees, meaning we will most likely not break them then. 

"Once we get past the 10th it gets even hotter. The records are 33, 36, and 35, so I'm not sure it is quite enough but we will be close, we'll have to see how it goes as the week goes by. If we decide we're going to increase the highs into the 30 range then maybe, I'm saying there is a chance we could break a record on one day or so." 

Lundquist adds that though it is hot, it is far to early to tell if it will be a record-breaking month. 

"It's way too early to say that… You know how the beginning of May in the southwest can be really hot, that is kind of the first, and then we think all of a sudden 'oh summer is here,' and then we get to the middle of May and into June and we get what is a little bit of a rainy season. June being the rainiest month of the year for much of the southwest interior." 

Lundquist mentioned that the start of May has also been very dry, something that could result in more fuel for wildfires. 

"I looked all the way out to 10 days, and it, perhaps, what is unusual, is that it's a very long period of fairly dry and hot weather, and that's got to be worried about the fire weather situation because the average high for this time of year is only 20 in Kamloops."  

Lundquist went on to say that though it is hot, boaters should still take caution when swimming because the cold water can still cause hypothermia at this point of the year.
