The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has launched an investigation into an incident involving police on Wednesday, June 3.
Shortly after 1 am, Lake Country police received a 911 call from a woman who was concerned for the well-being of a family member living in the community who she believed was in danger of harming himself.
After losing contact with her family member, the woman contacted police who managed to gain entry into the man’s home.
Upon entering, officers found the man in his bathroom with a sharp weapon.
“Despite the officer’s efforts to de-escalate the situation the man harmed himself,” stated RCMP in a press release.
“The officers immediately called in BC Emergency Health Services who had been staged, as a precaution, nearby the scene and took steps to provide first aid to the man awaiting their arrival. The man was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.”
The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries.
