  • Health Canada loosens regulations to boost supply of hand sanitizer, masks and swabs

Health Canada is loosening some of its regulations in an attempt to increase supplies of hand sanitizer, disinfectant, swabs, masks and gowns.

It comes as the country battles with the spread of COVID-19.

The temporary waiver will apply to products already authorized for sale in Canada but not fully compliant with Health Canada regulations in areas such as bilingual labelling or the type of packaging to be used.

The agency said it hopes to meet “unprecedented demand” for the products.

It will also apply to products not authorized for sale in Canada but which are approved in other jurisdictions with what the department calls “similar regulatory frameworks and quality assurances.”

    Those jurisdictions are not specified.

Health Canada said it is also expediting approvals of products and will expedite approvals of applications for licences to sell the products in Canada.
