Christmas can be an incredibly stressful time for many – defeating the purpose of what it's supposed to be about.
It can seem never-ending: navigating parties, meeting the demands of family and in-laws, all the while carting children around, a mountain of gifts, and somehow trying to find time to sleep, eat well, and not have a mental breakdown.
Employ these tips for a smoother holiday that will result in a sense of ease:
Don't be afraid to say no
We live in a people-pleasing culture.
A sense of obligation permeates our conscience, but ultimately what does it accomplish?
We neglect our own well being. Try saying no to parties, and attend only functions that are absolutely crucial.
In a FOMO centric culture, it's unlikely you're missing much. Spending time at home with the family will recharge you in a way attending an acquaintances' Christmas party never will.
Stop feeling obligated to partake in mass consumerism
A common trigger of stress for most: finances.
Yet we make excuses, tell ourselves white lies, and go into debt only to purchase unnecessary gifts for family, friends and coworkers.
Challenge yourself to make items from scratch, gift experiences or treat your loved ones to a home-cooked meal. While it may initially feel alien, your pocketbook will thank you.
Divide and conquer
It's a common expectation that we'll be present at every gathering or dinner – but what if you have multiple step-parents and siblings who've remarried into blended families resulting in a list of 40+ people to see?
Stop stretching yourself so thin, and instead opt to divide and conquer with your spouse.
You'll get more intimate, quality time with your immediate family, and not feel so tired or resentful.
Plan a getaway
Instead of welcoming stress into your life, with long drives, a big credit card bill and a tiresome week of endless holiday obligations – book a family getaway and skip the chaos altogether.
You'll be refreshed, excited and ready for the new year.
Give back
Nothing feels better than taking time to give back to your community – whether that be in the form of volunteering at your local Food Bank, visiting the elderly, walking dogs at the local shelter, or donating non-perishables to a shelter.
Take a moment to step back and take stock at what's really important – serving others inevitably makes the heart grow bigger.
How do you de-stress during the holiday season?
