Just before 2 am, RCMP responded to the fire at the building located on Lashburn Road.
Mill Bay Fire Rescue was paged at 1:50 am, and arrived at the scene within nine minutes.
“Quickly after the initial fire was knocked down it was discovered that due to the type of building construction, the fire had extended from the first floor through the wall stud space and up into the attic,” the fire department said.
They were able to contain the fire and extinguish it. Crews had cleaned up at the scene shortly after 7 am.
Police and Fire investigators examined the scene and discovered evidence “that raised suspicions as to the nature of the fire.”
According to the lodge's website, the 100th anniversary will take place in June 2024. This isn't the first time the lodge, which was completed in 1935, has been damaged by fire —in 1937, the building was completely destroyed, along with many records.
Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call the Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
