People, planet, prosperity. Those are the three top priorities for Daphane Nelson’s city council campaign.

Nelson is a native to the Thompson region and is originally from Clinton. She graduated from Ashcroft before moving to Kamloops in the 90s to attend Thompson Rivers University.

She has over 20 years of experience working with non-profits and local businesses through volunteer opportunities like the Relay for Life, Kamloops Food Policy Council, Farm 2 Chef, Community Features, the Kamloops Art Gallery and more.

About four years ago, Nelson started her own consulting practice to help other small businesses in the community.

Nelson says she believes that people, the plant and prosperity are all intertwined and play an important role in building "a healthy and vibrant community."

Some of her priorities include supporting food sovereignty, ensuring there is a mix of transportation options for residents and that the community takes part in keeping Kamloops clean.

Nelson also believes in supporting business development, providing and advocating for affordable housing and understanding addictions. 

Finally, she would prioritize sustainability in Kamloops through the development of reuse-it facilities, providing more ecotourism opportunities and advocating for shopping local.

“I kick it pretty old school,” says Nelson.

“As a result, while I am an advocate who sees inequality, inequity and general unfairness in the way the world has evolved I also see waste and consumerism baked into the fabric of our social systems and I think we can do better for everyone involved.”
