  • UPDATE: Coquihalla now open between Hope and Merritt after earlier vehicle incidents

(UPDATE: Dec. 20 @ 2:18 pm)- According to DriveBC, the Coquihalla Highway is now open after earlier vehicle incidents.

Travellers are warned that an advisory remains in effect due to unfavourable conditions.

(UPDATE: Dec. 20 @ 7:15 am) – Not even three hours after the northbound lanes reopened, they've been closed again.

According to DriveBC, the closure is due to "vehicle incidents and weather conditions."

It appears as though traffic can still get through southbound.

NowMedia will update this story as more information becomes available.

(UPDATE: Dec. 20 @ 5:50 am) – The Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) reopened in both directions overnight.

Crews were able to clear the southbound lanes of a vehicle incident around 12:20 am before opening up the northbound lanes shortly after 4 am.

A travel advisory is in affect for the notorious route, however, with DriveBC urging drivers to "exercise extreme caution" and expect delays up to an hour.

(UPDATE: Dec. 19 @ 9:05 pm) – According to DriveBC, the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) is now closed in both directions.

It's due to vehicle incidents between Merritt and Hope.

On various Facebook road report groups, travellers have said the road conditions are just as bad as advertised this evening and to avoid driving it if possible.

NowMedia will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

(Original story: Dec. 19 @ 8:20 pm) – As heavy snow continues to fall throughout the BC Interior, it's resulted in a closure of the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5).

DriveBC says "vehicle incidents" are the reason for the closure and the use of the plural would suggest it could be more than one.

The closure is only southbound and webcams show a significant backup in traffic from the Zopkios brake check to near the Coquihalla summit.

An assessment is in progress and the next update is expected around 9 pm.

NowMedia will update this story as more information becomes available.
