  • BC Hydro receives $710K penalty for safety issues at dam worksite

BC Hydro was handed a hefty fine for issues at a powerhouse for a hydroelectric dam construction site in northern BC.

According to WorkSafeBC, the powerhouse was inspected and damaged ventilation equipment was found.

Inspectors also found deficiencies in the employer’s practices to address welding fume hazards.

“In addition, the subcontracted firm conducting the welding work did not have an adequate exposure control plan in place for welding fumes,” WorkSafeBC says.

WorkSafeBC says BC Hydro, acting as the prime contractor of a multiple employer workplace, “failed to establish and maintain” regular compliance with safe workplace procedures.

WorkSafeBC considers this a “high-risk” violation, resulting in a $710,488.79 fine being issued in the fall of 2023.

In addition, inspectors found that BC Hydro failed to keep up-to-date procedures for providing first aid at the work site.

Both of these violations were considered repeated violations.
