Haven't gotten your fill of Canada 150 yet? Never fear, as there is a new exhibit coming to Kelowna for one day, and it may be the most beautiful expression of Canadian pride we’ve seen yet.

This Saturday, November 4th, a dome will be set up in the lobby of the Capital News Centre with free admission from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Inside the dome, visitors will have the chance to experience SESQUI's 20 minute long hemispherical film titled Horizon. We say “experience” rather than “watch” because that’s really what it is – an experience.

The film, only showing in 50 communities across the country, was not expected to be making a stop in Kelowna as it was simply too large for us to accommodate. 

"We first heard about SESQUI in 2015. It’s one of the signature Canada 150 projects and the concept really seemed to showcase Canada in a unique and spectacular way, so we’ve been looking at ways to bring the project to Kelowna for quite some time," said Mariko Siggers, Community and Neighbourhood Services Manager at the City of Kelowna. "When the organizer reached out recently saying that they had a scaled down version that would be free for the community to view, we were ecstatic."

Considered a “visual symphony of Canada”, Horizon was filmed from coast to coast, covering each province and territory. The film was shot in 9k resolution with 360 technologies, which creates an immersive experience when displayed in the dome.

Shot in over 50 locations, over 40 shooting days and with 386 on-screen performers, each of the 90+ scenes in Horizon were shot in 360 degrees, including one scene with a figure skater from Kamloops skating on a frozen lake in the Yukon!

The film beautifully portrays Canada’s cultural, natural and artistic diversity. With everything from aerial dancers and beluga whales, to parkour and hip hop, to dog sledding and agriculture, Horizon is a surprising and awe-inspiring display of our country. 

"We’re one of 50 communities who will get to view this film in 2017. It’s one of the hallmark projects that is commemorating this historic milestone in Canadian History. It will only be shown in Kelowna for one day so it’s definitely a unique opportunity!" said Siggers. "We have done a great job locally of celebrating the sesquicentennial, and I’m really proud that our community was chosen to host this nationally supported initiative as well."
