Alberta has decided to make 18-years-old the minimum age to use cannabis when Canada's new marijuana laws take effect next summer.

Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley says Alberta residents will have until October 27th to give feedback on the proposal and legislation will be introduced in the months ahead.

Proposed Rules:

• Public possession limit of 30 grams (with no limit on possession in private residences).
• Sales will be in specialty stores, separate from alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceuticals.
• Limit of 30 grams per purchase.
• Smoking and vaping in public will fall under existing tobacco laws.
• No smoking or vaping in vehicles, including passengers.
• Four plants can be grown per household, to a maximum height of one metre each.
• Outdoor growing will be banned.

"We recognize there are health concerns around young people using cannabis," Ganley said Wednesday. "But we also know that young people, those between the ages of 18 and 25, are the largest age category of users in Alberta.

"Setting the minimum age at 18 will encourage younger people to access cannabis legally instead of getting it through a drug dealer."

The province has yet to decide whether stores selling marijuana will be publicly or privately run but that pricing will be set with the goal of reducing the black market.
