Before getting into the holiday spirit, it’s important to pay respect to the men and women who gave their lives.

Remembrance day is coming up, and there are a number of events to help you honour the sacrifices members of the Canadian Armed Forces continue to make. 

On the 11th day of the 11th month at 11 o’clock people are asked to pause for two minutes of silence for reflection on the sacrifices made during war times.

Victoria Remembrance Day Ceremony

The Remembrance Day Service for Province of British Columbia Annual includes a parade on Wharf to Government Street, Belleville, Menzies, and the Legislature Grounds. A ceremony takes place at the Provincial Cenotaph, located at the Parliament Buildings. Full details on the event are expected soon.

Langford Remembrance Day Ceremony

Langford also holds a ceremony you can take part in at Veterans Memorial Park at 10:30 am. Click here for more information. 

Oak Bay Remembrance Day Ceremony

You can also attend a ceremony in Oak Bay at the Cenotaph, located at 2800 Beach Drive. The event starts at 10:55 am on Nov. 11. Spectators are also able to attend the ceremony virtually by watching the livestream. Click here for more information.

Remembrance Day Concert at Mary Winspear Theatre

In honour of Remembrance Day, the Sidney Concert Band will be performing at the Mary Winspear Theatre on Nov. 5, 2023 at 2 pm. The annual concert will have a special focus on the contributions made by our armed forces in Afghanistan. Tickets are available here.

In the Mood Quartet: Music of the WWII Swing Era

In addition to taking in a ceremony, you can also experience the music of the WWII era. In The Mood Quartet will be performing at Hermann’s Jazz Club on Nov. 11, 2023. 

Listen to the traditional pop and jazz of the late 1930s and 1940s — “the songs of love and longing, playful flirting, and swingin’ distraction,” performed by Angela Verbrugge and the In the Mood Quartet. 

“This music defined a decade and uplifted hearts through dark wartime days. This Remembrance Day, join us to bob your head, tap your toe, reflect, and take a sombre moment to remember those who have lost and will lose their lives fighting for peace in a unique format,” says the event listing. 

Angela, who relocated to Victoria in 2019, previously would perform this annually to critical acclaim in the Vancouver area. The last two years at Hermann’s have sold out so gather your groups and make a reservation.
