“You ever heard of a soft touch? You ever heard of a finger roll?” sings The Carbons frontman Tomy Thisdale in the band’s latest music video. 

The lyrics are from the song “Relentless” by Arkells and work as a casual reference to a smooth scoring play in basketball, but the spirit of the video actually stands in contrast to any competitive on-court action. 

At the beginning of February, both The Carbons and fellow Kelowna band Where We Wander found themselves in a heated competition to win an opening slot for Arkells at the highly anticipated AltiTunes Music Festival.

Various bands covered Arkells and local fans were asked to vote in the comment section — needless to say, it was a stressful weekend for a lot of the local music scene. 

"After the dust settled one of the band members from Where We Wander messaged us and said 'If we don't get the opening slot, we hope you do'," explained Thisdale.

"It was such a genuine moment and we quickly remembered that music is about unity and collaboration."

In an effort to lift each band up instead of having them pinned against one another, the two acts joined forces at Kelowna studio The Record Room to record an Arkells' tune together. 

The resulting video is a heartwarming collection on local musicians all rocking out in the same room. 

And they sound pretty damn good as one big band. 

"The whole process was so enjoyable and so constructive," added Thisdale.

"We all decided we will be doing more of this in the future."
