Why are most of us so terrified of getting up in front of our esteemed peers?
Think about it: it's really no different than being among colleagues, discussing industry topics.
But, switch up the scenario just slightly – mic in hand on stage – and suddenly, you're frozen, terrified at screwing up, and coming across as a total imposter.
I have an upcoming speaking engagement in a few weeks, and despite having MC'd weddings, professional events of 100s of people, every time this type of scenario looms, I experience major anxiety.
This time around, I've decided to equip myself with as many tricks and secrets of the pros as possible, so that I come across as totally effortless and at ease.
Here are the tips from the myriad videos I've watched as of late, that have resonated the most:
1. Slow down
When we're nervous, we have the tendency to ramble and speak at a rapid rate. Speak slow, clearly, and succinctly, and you'll get your point across with far more clarity.
2. Authenticity reigns
Now, this doesn't mean you need to tell your audience that you're freaked out and totally anxious. Instead, share a few personal anecdotes and put the audience at ease – even if you're the one who needs it most.
3. One thought, one look
This might be the best advice I've heard as of late. Have you ever seen a speaker who avoids eye contact?
It translates as odd, and there's next to no opportunity to feel like you've connected. On the contrary, think of a speaker who knocked your socks off – when they spoke, they made eye contact with you, and it might have felt like you were the only person in the room for those fleeting moments they were looking at you.
4. Be bold
You're not going to be memorable if you don't take a chance. Say that thing that might spark controversy – at the very least, it'll get a conversation going.
5. Tell a story
There's nothing worse than a robotic MC, who never looks up from their notes, or reads off a PowerPoint presentation. Have a story prepared ahead of time, that you can recount with your eyes closed. This will hook your audience and have them captivated for the duration of your presentation.
