There's a little patch of lawn between the SS Sicamous and the Penticton Rose Garden. It's normally a serene place where folks walk and jog to and from the Okanagan Lake waterfront.

Except now. From yesterday through to Halloween, the area's become a bit weirder. Just a bit more…haunted.

One week ago, construction began on a ramshackle little building on that very spot. It's all clad in black, and inside awaits an assortment of oddities and straight-up freaks of nature designed to send your heart racing.

It's called "Ghost Life," and it's the product of Penticton resident Chad White and his best and most twisted friends. They hope it's the start of a Penticton tradition.

"A big part of what I'm doing in this town is to help the community," said White at the entrance to Ghost Life this afternoon. "There's not a lot do here sometimes, so we're doing this to give kids and adults something to do, something fun, something they'll remember."

It's White's first go-around at the haunted house business.

"I went to the Sicamous board. They're awesome and they agreed right away. They'll be getting some of the proceeds from this, so everybody's happy."

PentictonNow took a quick tour through Ghost Life in broad daylight and found it suitably macabre. But White tells us it's a wee bit different in the evening.

"We'll run from noon every day 'til 11:00 at night," he said, "but after 7 p.m., we do 16-plus only. That's when it gets quite a bit scarier."

White wouldn't give away any secrets, saying only after extreme persuasion that, "We run it scary."

"If this works out really well, we'll also donate to the food banks. That's a big thing in my life. I think everybody should have food."

They'll also host a pumpkin-carving contest on Halloween night, with prizes donated by Penticton businesses. "The contest is Halloween night in the early evening, but pumpkins can be carved now and left here. We'll take your name, and then on Halloween night judges will pick the winners."

Admission to Ghost Life is $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for kids. Hot dogs, burgers, and refreshments are served under an adjacent tent.
