  • 5 steps to a healthier state of mind

Take to Instagram, or even just the internet at large, and you'll likely be plagued with a never ending stream of inspirational quotes and memes promising to "fix your woes".

It seems the current state of our society lives with palpable amounts of stress, much of which is self imposed.

These levels of stress have provided clever, business minded individuals opportunities to make money by way of coaching and online classes, all with the virtue of a "quick" fix.

Yet, enrol in any of these online courses and you'll likely just be left with a few less dollars in your bank account.

Employ the following 5 techniques that are easy to add to your day to day, and be surprised at how much mental clarity you'll encounter.

    1. You're never going to feel like it – don't wait for motivation to strike

It's the million dollar question – where do wildly successful people like Tony Robbins or Gary Vaynerchuk find their motivation?

They don't – they know how powerful having a daily routine is, and they also know how important it is to act on impulse when the thought strikes.

Thinking about the gym? Get up and go within 5 seconds – it's unlikely you'll have the desire to go later on in the day if you decide to put it off.

    2. Adapt, don't quit

Many of us struggle with the cycle of employing some type of workout regime. Maybe we hit the weights too hard and then we're too sore to go back for another week. Or, we manage to go a few times a week, only to fall ill and have the new routine be derailed entirely.

Instead of giving up on all that hard work – adapt, and implement another means of exercise. If you're too sick to go to the gym, go for a walk instead. If you don't have the energy to do a full high intensity work out, split it in half. Consistency always wins!

    3. Self nurture > self loathing

Negative self talk, the inner chatter box, the devil on your shoulder – we all deal with this mental battle. However, the inner critic is most often just flat out wrong and irrational.

Learn to employ self care techniques that make you feel good, instead of feeding this inner turmoil that brings out further anxiety and worry.

Read a book, meditate, take a bath, go for a long walk, reach out to a friend, get outside – do anything just to get out of your own head, even if it means just walking out your front door to get 5 minutes of fresh air.

    4. Realize that everything is a choice

We're often so caught up with the belief that our personalities or patterns of behaviour are immune to change.

Author Shan Boodram discusses this epidemic in her latest book, "The Game of Desire". It's entirely up to us how we want to be perceived, even things like the tone of voice we use in conversations.

The only constant in life is change – so learn to embrace it.

    5. Learn to love rejection

Rejection is the universe telling you to pivot and take a new path.

The more you force an opportunity or relationship is a dishonour and disservice to your greater calling.

Start to appreciate rejection as blessings in disguise.
