A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for many parts of the province over the weekend but in Alberta, a tornado touched down as the wild weather was reported.

The BC Interior was under the thunderstorm watch for much of the weekend but in many places, the extreme conditions did not occur. According to Environment Canada, a tornado was confirmed 10 kilometres northeast of the community of Okotoks, Alta on Sunday.

Meteorologists were tracking the dangerous storms Sunday afternoon and storm spotters reported funnel clouds as well as some damage.

“From the reports and photographs received by Environment and Climate Change Canada, a preliminary assessment of the damage has led the meteorologists to conclude that an Enhanced Fujita scale zero (EF0) a tornado with peak winds between 90 and 130 kilometres per hour,” said meteorologists.

This is the second time this month tornados have been spotted in Alberta. At the beginning of July, at least one tornado was confirmed and several funnel clouds spotted.
