Nearly 250 elementary students gathered at Okanagan College on Thursday morning to participate in the 19th annual Wild Festival for Youth.
The event was created by the Nature's Wild Neigbours Society in 1999, as a way to get the youth of our community more involved with nature through interactive outdoor experiences and environmental education.

For a full day, students are taken out of the classroom and given the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, adventures and lectures, where they will learn more on a variety of topics like sustainability, ecosystems and wildlife.

Students in attendance for the 19th annual event, had the chance to build and paint their own birdhouses, make their mark on the “Year of the Bird” banner, and learn all about Birds of Prey from the Burrowing Owl Conservation Society.

The groups of students took turns rotating between the Okanagan College activities and Mission Creek Park, where they toured through the information centre and embarked on an educational nature walk.

After nearly two decades, the Wild Festival for Youth is still running strong, gearing up young members of the community to become advocates for our wild areas and stewards for environmental conservation.
