The Colwood Fire Department said the couple recognized a driver’s distress on Wednesday evening and pulled over to help, just as the car engine caught fire.
The couple helped the driver exit the vehicle and maintained traffic control until emergency personnel arrived.
When firefighters arrived they were faced with heavy smoke and active flames exiting the front end of the vehicle.

Both westbound lanes on Island Hwy/Sooke Road had to be temporarily shut down by the RCMP to allow firefighters room to safely fight the fire.
Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down, which allowed them to reposition the fire truck onto Goldstream Ave and re-open westbound traffic on Island Hwy/Sooke Road.
Goldstream Ave remained totally closed for about an hour to allow for fire overhaul, removal of the vehicle, and clean-up of the scene.
There were no injuries or further damage to property as a result of this fire. The vehicle did sustain significant damage and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
