  • Vikes women bounce back with 86-84 win over Wesmen

    Fifth-year guard Ashlyn Day scored a game-high 31 points to lead the UVic Vikes women’s basketball team to an 86-86 win over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen at home on Saturday night.

    It is the second time this season the Kelowna, BC product has eclipsed the 30-point mark this season, the first instance coming during the team’s first win of the season in Lethbridge last weekend. Day now leads the Canada West in scoring, averaging 31.0 points per game. 

    However, it was the Wesmen who led the game early, opening up a 27-25 point lead at the conclusion of the first quarter. But UVic would come roaring back in the second, holding Winnipeg to seven points in the frame while adding 25 more of their own to take a 50-34 lead into half time.

    The Wesmen would regain some life in the second half, outscoring the Vikes 26-21 in the third and 24-15 in the fourth, however the early deficit would prove too much to overcome and UVic would escape with the 86-84 victory.

    In addition to her 31 points, Day would record a pair of rebounds and three assists. Fourth-year guard Tegan MacKinnon would also come up big for the Vikes, recording 23 points of her own, with 21 of those coming via three-pointers.

    Kyana Giles was the top performer for Winnipeg in the loss, collecting 30 points, eight rebounds and three assists in the loss.

    The Vikes will take the week off as they prepare for a weekend road set against the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19 in Edmonton, AB.
