Early indications suggest damage from a Monday evening fire at a city owned heritage building may be too extensive for it to be salvaged.  But heritage buffs are standing up to defend the old Fleming House. Okanagan Historical Society past president, Bob Hayes asks: "Stonehenge was damaged.  They didn't take it down did they?"

The house was built in 1871 using large squared logs, then milled siding was added decades later.  It first sat on Harvey Avenue before moving to it's current location at the Heritage Park at the foot of Dilworth Mountain.  Strangely it was placed at the park with the porch and attractive dormers facing away giving it a rather uninteresting appearance for passers-by.

There are concerns about the stability of the badly burned structure, but the city said it's working with the local heritage society to determine the best path forward.  Martin Johansen told KelownaNow no final decisions have been made.
