  • VIDEO: A century of War Amps

War Amps recently marked their 100th anniversary.

The milestone was celebrated during The War Amps 2018 Child Amputee (CHAMP) seminar which took place in Winnipeg earlier this year.

An Okanagan valley boy and his father were among the guests at the seminar.

“Samuel has above the knee bilateral amputations,” says Stephen Peters, who along with his wife adopted Samuel from Mainland China 7 years ago.

By attending the seminar, Samuel got to meet other amputees, and see how they’ve adapted as they grow into adulthood.  He also learned how to answer any questions that may come up about his amputations.

“I say I was born without legs, but I don’t let it stop me," Samuel exclaims.

Parents attending the conference learned about the latest in artificial limbs, and recreational devices for sports and music, which can come with big price tags.  That cost is then compounded by how fast the child grows – a child like Samuel can outgrow artificial limbs as quickly as they would a pair of shoes.

The War Amps Key Tag and Address Label Service help provide financial assistance towards the cost of prosthetics for Samuel, “When you are a kid, you can through 1 or 2 pairs a year.” says Peters.
