  • Vancouver officially delivers its bid for Amazon’s second headquarters

Vancouver has now become one of the many North American cities to submit a bid to become the home of Amazon’s second headquarters.

Amazon’s HQ2 bid has been referred to as possibly being “the biggest economic development event in a generation.”

Amazon reported today that it has received a total of 238 bids from cities and regions in 54 states, provinces, districts, and territories across North America.

The Vancouver Economic Commision (VEC) announced that Metro Vancouver’s bid was successfully hand-delivered to Amazon on Thursday, October 19th.

The VEC says that the six-week project to assemble the bid saw “a level unprecedented since the 2010 Winter Olympics.”

The bid that was submitted to Amazon will not be made public out of respect for the process. The VEC says that they have opted to allow Amazon the courtesy of having a first glance at the proposal.

The VEC did say that their proposal focuses on the “built-in incentives” that the region would offer, rather than engaging in a “race to the bottom” with cash incentives, like land, cash, or tax incentives.

Amazon says that the second headquarters would be an equal to its Seattle campus, and to do so they expect to invest more than $5 billion into its construction and will bring as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs to the successful city.

Amazon will take the rest of 2017 to review the proposals handed in by the hundreds of cities vying for the opportunity to host the new Amazon headquarters.
