Although most of the Southern Interior is under various flood advisories, four wildfires in Northern BC have prompted a few evacuation alerts as crews work to battle the province’s few wildfires of note.
The Boundary Lake wildfire is located near the BC/Alberta border, east of Fort St. John. The BC Wildfire Service says the fire is considered out of control at 1,900 hectares.
The Peace River Regional District has issued an evacuation order and an evacuation alert for properties near this fire.
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) suspects that this fire is human caused.
“BCWS personnel are working to evacuate residents immediately impacted by the fire. Two helicopters are on scene supporting structure protection operations,” says an update on the fire.
“The area is being impacted by heavy smoke and visibility is poor. Aviation resources are currently being challenged by the poor visibility.”
The Red Creek wildfire located northwest of Fort St. John is burning out of control at about 475 hectares. This fire has not prompted any evacuation orders or alerts.
According to the BCWS, there is a four person initial attack crew, one unit crew and one officer responding to this incident. There are also two helicopters on site.
The Coffee Creek wildfire is also burning northwest of Fort St. John. Fortunately this fire was held at 60 hectares. There are three initial attack crews working to mop up any hotspots.
A little further south, the Teare Creek wildfire continues to burn out of control and is now estimated at 600 hectares.
An evacuation order and evacuation alert have been issued by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George and the Village of McBride.
There are four initial attack crews working on this fire with help from four helicopters.
“The fire is burning in steep, challenging terrain and fire activity has increased this afternoon with the high onsite winds, dry fuels and terrain features,” says BCWS.
"Air tankers were on site for several hours in the afternoon, focusing on structure protection operations."
