  • Winter storm leaves thousands without power in the BC Interior

BC Hydro had their work cut out for them on Tuesday as thousands were left without power in the BC Interior due to a winter storm.

According to Hydro's outage map, 70 incidents between the Thompson-Shuswap, Central Interior, and the Okanagan-Kootenay had 20,839 residents without power.

The largest area experiencing issues was the Thompson-Shuswap with 43 outages affecting 18,518 customers. Salmon Arm was hit the hardest for major cities as three outages, two of which were caused by transmission circuit failure, left 6,535 customers in the dark.

"Last night's heavy and wet snowfall caused extensive outages in the region today, particularly near Chase, Kamloops Sorrento, Salmon Arm and 100 Mile House, leaving 18,000 customers without power," wrote BC Hydro. "Crews are responding as quickly as possible to restore power to the affected customers. Individual restoration updates will be provided as soon as they are available."

Despite Kamloops not experiencing major issues, surrounding areas such as Pritchard, Chase, 100 Mile House, and Quesnel each saw outages affecting over 1,000 people.

Kelowna and Penticton didn't see any problems but the Okanagan was immune to issues. Areas near Vernon saw close to 500 residents lose power while Enderby had an outage affecting 2,171 people.
