A fire that has been burning in Southern British Columbia since Saturday night is finally contained.

Ryan Turcot, fire information officer based out of the Provincial Wildfire Coordination Centre, said the fire has been burning four kilometres East of Cawston. It was first discovered Saturday night, when a member of the public called them at around 6 or 7 p.m.

Initially, four firefighters went out and worked on it Saturday night, but by Sunday, 15 firefighters were on site to contain it.

By Monday morning, Turcot said it was in the mop-up stage, which means it has been contained and a crew of three firefighters is patrolling the perimeter looking for hot spots and extinguishing them with water or soil.

The centre suspects that the fire was human caused, although they haven’t determined specific details yet.

“This is the time of year where it really matters that people use an abundance of caution when they’re using any kind of fire whether it’s a campfire or open burning," said Turcot. “Even one human caused fire is one too many.

"As we get into the core of the fire season, those types of fires detract resources from the ones we can’t prevent.”

Turcot said while wildfires this time of year aren't unprecedented, it is still a bit ahead of the regular fire season.
