(UPDATE: Jan. 2 @ 6:30 am) – After what was surely a terrible and terrifying New Year's Eve, Mark Gayowski had a wonderful New Year's Day.

The 34-year-old Rossland man, who went missing on the backside of Red Mountain on Monday, was found by search and rescue crews.

"He was found in very good health, and happy to see our teams," said a statement from South Columbia Search and Rescue. 

"Mark was airlifted out of the back country and brought to our location at Red Mountain where he went for medical care as a precaution."

Around 90 search and rescue members spent three days searching in what SCSAR called "horrific and challenging conditions," as a winter storm battered the area.

(Original story: Dec. 31 @ 11:20 am) – The RCMP are working with local search and rescue to try and find a missing skier on Red Mountain.

Police were notified of the situation around 5 pm on Monday when Rossland resident Mark Gayowski failed to return from a run on the backside of the mountain.

An initial search was quickly launched, but it was limited due to darkness, dangerous terrain and heavy snowfall.

Gayowski is described as a 34-year-old Caucasian man who’s around 6’0”, 209 lbs.

He was wearing a light blue ski jacket, a pair of black ski pants, a brown toque and ski goggles when he went out on the hill.

The ground search resumed this morning with snowmobiles and ski teams both assisting in the search, but poor weather conditions are hampering the search.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Gayowski is urged to contact the Trail and Greater District RCMP.
