Breaking News:

This is some breaking news!

  • Saturday Spotlight featuring: Static Says

You can catch them busking on Bernard, playing at Parks Alive and at independent venues almost every night. Their music has become the soundtrack to Kelowna, but who are they?

KelownaNow wants to get to know the hard working, up and coming artists who fill our city with groovy tunes and we’re almost positive most of you do too!

This week we are shining the spotlight on local group, Static Says. This band is doing their part to keep pop-punk alive. With a female vocalist who wails just like Hayley Williams, and hard-hitting, fast ripping musicians, you'll relive your fondest warped tour memories while jammin' out to their alt-rock influenced sound.

Where did the name “Static Says” come from?

To be completely honest, we had been throwing band names around for several months, we were taking too long to decide and so we just settled on the best one we had come up with so far.

How would you describe your sound?

We consider ourselves to be a pop-punk band but have found the sound we've created to be a little bit more rock alternative.

What bands have influenced or inspired your music?

Paramore, Tonight Alive, Neck Deep, Knuckle Puck…Our drummer and bassist listen to a lot of metal as well so bands like Periphery influence their playing.

What has been your biggest musical achievement?

The release of our debut EP, Insecurities.

How long have you been playing music in the Okanagan?

We've been playing shows in the Okanagan for almost a year now.

Why do you like the Kelowna music scene?

It really brings musicians in town together. Kelowna doesn’t have a huge creative arts field so it’s really awesome to meet people that we have things in common with at shows. In spending time within the Kelowna music scene we’ve made a lot of friends and have been able to collaborate with a lot of artists we otherwise wouldn’t have.

What is something you currently have on heavy rotation?

Neck Deep's new album, The Peace and the Panic.

If you could open for any band or artist who would it be?

Paramore! Us female-fronted bands gotta stick together!

    What is your dream gig?

Playing the Vans Warped Tour would definitely be a dream come true. Unfortunately, that’ll probably never happen considering this is the last year of the tour, so that's sad.

If you could bring back one musician from the dead for a final performance who would it be?

It might sound pretty cliche but, definitely Kurt Cobain.

    Favourite local venue?

Munnin's Post, we've played and attended several shows there over the past few months and it's always a good time!

What local band/artists do you want to shout out?

Our guitarist plays in another band called “Reasons to Wake”, they’re an alternative rock band from Lake Country. We’ll be playing some shows with them coming up soon so be on the lookout for that!
