More highways around Kamloops will undergo resurfacing projects this summer.

With the repaving project on Highway 1 east of Kamloops around 50 per cent complete, Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, said the focus will move to Highway 5 once it is complete.

“After crews finish with repaving Highway 1, they’ll move on to Highway 5 between Rayleigh and Heffley Creek, where approximately 11 kilometres of road will be resurfaced,” he said.

The roads will be paved with hot-in-place recycled asphalt which produces up to 50 per cent fewer emissions than conventional paving, as it uses and recycles the existing asphalt on the project site.

“This process of recycling  the material is faster, saves resources and lowers carbon emissions,” said MLA Kamloops-North Thompson Terry Lake. “It’s great to see a local Kamloops company, ARC Asphalt win this $3.9 million contract and use this innovative technology to rehabilitate B.C. highways.”

The hot-in-place method has been used in the province since 1986.

The work done on Kamloops highways is a part of the provinces 10-year-transporation plan in which the ministry plans to invest over $386 million over the next three years to resurface provincial highways.
