As you beautify your garden this spring, don’t forget that you can recycle your plant pots and plenty more.

That’s the message the Regional District of Central Okanagan is trying to push as more people start to spend their weekends tending to their yards.

Everything from large nursery flowerpots to small planting trays can be recycled in your blue bin, which is picked up every two weeks.

The only thing you have to do is rinse or wipe out the plastics first and throw out the little tags that identify plants, which are not recyclable.

“Most plastic packaging is accepted in the curbside recycling program, and these plastics from your plants are no different,” says Rae Stewart, waste reduction facilitator.

Deanne Stephenson, manager of Cascades Recovery, says it's important to keep things like dirt, wooden stakes, metal twist ties and other contaminants out of the recycle bin.

Other garden items not accepted include ceramic pots, tarps, plastic furniture, garden hoses and plastic string or rope,” she said.
