  • RCMP actions under investigation after man in custody suffers ‘serious injury’

The actions of RCMP are under investigation following an interaction in Prince George this weekend.

On Saturday at about 8:30 p.m., an officer with the PG RCMP stopped a male cyclist who he had allegedly observed weaving in and out of traffic near 5th Avenue and Ewart Street while also not wearing a helmet.

The officer planned to identify him and give him a ticket, but instead attempted to arrest him for other unrelated offences on Alward Street. The man allegedly resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody with assistance from back-up officers.

He was detained and placed in a cell that night.

In the morning, the man complained that he was in pain and was transported to the local hospital by BC EHS with serious injuries, says the Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC).

The IIO BC is conducting an investigation into the matter to determine if the actions, or inactions, of the RCMP are linked to the man's injuries.

IIO BC is looking for witnesses to the incident and asking anyone who may have saw, heard, or recorded either incident to contact the IIO witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
