All eyes are on Whistler these days as a rare white bear cub has been spotted. Now, everyone is trying to catch a glimpse of the adorable creature.

The exciting and rare discovery was made last week by guide Kathy Jenkins, according to Whistler Blackcomb. The sighting was posted to the mountain resort’s “bear reports” page and includes a photo of the “white-ish,” caramel-coloured cub with his black bear momma.

“After 23 years of research, I have seen cubs ranging from black, reddish brown, chocolate brown to blonde (after summer bleaching of coat) but, never have seen in this population, a cub with pelage (fur) this light to almost white,” said Michael Allen, an independent researcher who contributes to the reports.

Allen does not believe that this is an albino but rather, the cub is possibly a result of both parents having a recessive gene. The white bear cub has now sparked debate as to whether or not it is a Kermode bear or an albino.

If the bear does turn out to be a Kermode — or Spirit Bear — this would be the farthest south the endangered animal has been spotted, experts said.
