The province is fighting 149 wildfires as of July 31st, according to chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek.

RCMP Sgt. Annie Linteau said that the police are investigating Sunday’s Knox Mountain fire. She said reports have come of potential suspects scene in the area but that the investigation is still in its early stages.

The BC Wildfire has spent $178.5 million fighting 825 wildfires since April 1, he said. With 426,000 hectares burned since the start of the fire season, 2017 has shaped up as the third worst fire season since records began. Only 1958 and 1961 have exceeded it.

One of B.C.’s most aggressive fires that continues to challenge firefighters is the Elephant Hill wildfire, which sits at 78,540 hectares burned with over 360 firefighters assigned to the half-contained blaze.

Potentially gusty winds are expected for the southern part of the province in the coming days. The southeastern portion can expect some dry lightning to ago along with it.

"It’s not looking good weather-wise for the month ahead," said Skrepnek.

“We are on the cusp of a heatwave across southern B.C. and we have at least a month of this left, if not longer. August is historically one of our busiest times.”
