  • Prince George RCMP make 13 arrests on ‘cheque day’

Prince George RCMP was kept busy on Wednesday, this time after monthly income assistance payments were issued to those in need.

According to police, this day and the following days are the busiest of the month for RCMP. This month was no different as officers made 13 arrests and wrote up 14 violations in 24 hours.

Just after 8 am, cops found a woman smoking drugs near the corner of 10th Avenue and Brunswick Street. The 38-year-old was arrested for drug possession, her 17th offence this year.

Less than an hour later, a 33-year-old man was arrested for a robbery that took place on Tuesday. In that incident, the man threatened to stab a staff member with an uncapped needle. The man was charged for Failure to Comply with Recognizance. Police have had 40 negative contacts with this person so far in 2019.

Just after noon, a 59-year-old man was consuming open liquor on 3rd Avenue. The man was intoxicated and arrested. Upon further investigation, police found he was wanted from another community for sexual assault. He was released on a Promise to Appear for the sex assault charge, but police found him consuming open alcohol again the next day. The man has been lodged into cells 12 times for being drunk and unable to care for himself.

Before 1 pm, a man was issued a violation ticket for smoking cannabis at a bus stop. Police then found that he had an outstanding arrest in another community. He was arrested but later released on a Promise to Appear for Court.

At 2:40 pm, a 45-year-old woman was arrested for failing to comply with her probation. She was held overnight but also had to be released until her court appearance on November 13th.

By the time 3:45 pm rolled around, officers were called to a shoplifting on Redwood Street. The 29-year-old found in possession of the stolen goods was released without charges because the business owner refused to give a statement. The man was later found consuming drugs on 2nd Avenue and arrested again. After being released, that same man was arrested for assaulting a security guard at the library.

In addition to these incidents, four other men were arrested for public intoxication, one of whom was a cyclist driving down the wrong side of the street.

Police were required by law to release the individuals.
