  • Prince George Airport sees slight decrease in passengers for 2019

Prince George Airport was a little less busy in 2019…

According to YXS, the airport saw a total of 496,714 travellers last year. That number is 1.9% less than in 2018. Comparing to years past, 2018 had 506,486 travellers, 2017 had 499,125, 2016 had 462,007, 2015 had 470,849, and 2014 had 445,929.

“The regional economy is impacting our passenger activity, however, we remain optimistic heading into 2020,” says President and CEO of the Prince George Airport Authority, Gordon Duke. “Comparable airports across Canada saw similar decreases in their passenger numbers in 2019 as airlines had to rework their networks to make up for the grounding of the Boeing 737 Max aircraft earlier in the year, which meant aircraft availability was stretched thin to make up for it.”

Highlights from the year included Pacific Coastal Airlines increasing service by adding a second daily flight to Victoria as well as a Saturday service. Air North also announced weekly scheduled service to Whitehorse, Kelowna, and Vancouver on a 737-700.

In 2019, the PGAA spent close to $11 million on capital improvements including enhanced safety and operational capacity on runways and aprons, expanding the long term parking lot, constructing a new food and beverage cafe in the departure lounge, and installing new flooring and check-in counters.
