In a symbolic gesture of solidarity from across the globe, Canada’s national flag appeared on the Swiss Alps over the weekend. 

The red and white maple leaf was projected onto the mighty Matterhorn Saturday night in the village of Zermatt, Switzerland. 

Standing at 4,478 metres, the Matterhorn is one of the tallest peaks in Europe and has been used as a giant projection screen for the Swiss to forward messages to the world during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“We share our hope with Canada!” a post on the official Switzerland page stated.

“The Matterhorn was illuminated with the Maple Leaf last night. Zermatt Matterhorn wants to give hope and solidarity to all of you.”

There is a new projection on the Matterhorn every day according to the Zermatt tourism website and you can see the projections live via webcam.

Since the country entered lockdown on March 16, the mountain has been illuminated with encouraging messages honouring other countries including Brazil, Turkey, Russia, Iran, Peru, Austria, Pakistan, Singapore and Poland.

According to Johns Hopkins University, as of April 26, Switzerland has 29,061 confirmed known cases of coronavirus with 1,610 total deaths.
