(UPDATE: 8:12 p.m.) – West Kelowna firefighters have contained a group of five spot fires that ignited in a one-kilometre stretch along a Mt. Boucherie hiking trail. 

Crews received several reports of the fires at around 5 p.m. Monday night and responded with a total of 19 firefighters and four trucks. 

Fire investigators from West Kelowna Fire Rescue (WKFR) and BC Wildfire Service are working alongside RCMP to determine the cause of the fires, which are still suspicious and appear to be human-caused. 

The WKFR are thankful for the public's quick reports, allowing the firefighters to rapidly extinguish the fires before they were able to damage buildings or cause injury. 

(Original Story: 6:28 p.m.) – West Kelowna firefighters responded to multiple reports of several spot fires that sparked on the east side of Mt. Boucherie Monday evening.

19 personnel responded to what appeared to be four to five spot fires which were burning along the hiking trail, says Jason Brolund, West Kelowna Fire Chief.

"The fires are definitely suspicious," said Brolund, "whenever we see fires like this set alongside a trail there is no explanation for them other than being human-caused."

The fire investigator with RCMP is on scene actively working on determining the cause.

As of 6:12 p.m., firefighters had doused three of the fires and were progressing towards extinguishing the fourth. 

The fires never grew to larger than campfire size and due to the favourable weather conditions the fires have not grown. Brolund anticipates the fires should be extinguished within the next hour or so.
