New Zealand discharged its final COVID-19 patient from hospital on Thursday, May 27. 

According to a release from the Ministry of Health, the country’s last infected patient was discharged from a hospital in Middlemore near the capital city of Auckland. 

The country has also not identified a positive test for the virus in the last five days, with the total number of cases reported to the World Health Organization sitting at 1,154.

While the country still has eight active cases among its population of 4.8-million people, a total of 1,474 people have fully recovered from the virus. 

There have been 22 deaths from COVID-19 in New Zealand. 

On March 1, a Level 4 alert was issued forcing the closure of schools, canceling of mass gatherings and implementing stay at home orders for residents. 

That was dialed back to a Level 2 alert in mid-May, permitting the reopening of contactless businesses and schools.

As of Friday, May 28, the government has moved towards Level 1, allowing gatherings of up to 100 people as long as physical distancing is practiced. 

According to Johns Hopkins, neighbouring Australia recorded nine new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, with 102 deaths in the country.
