Weather records fell around the province on Sunday including in Kelowna, Kamloops, Osoyoos and Vernon.

According to Environment Canada, the hot spot in the province was in the Lytton area as temperatures reached a scorching 38.5C, smashing the old record set in 1969 at 25C. Kamloops and Osoyoos weren’t far behind as the temperature in these cities reached 36C, each breaking the previous record set in 1969.

Kelowna just squeaked past the old record of 33.9C set in 1969 with a high of 34.5C on Sunday. Vernon also broke a record on Sunday with a daytime high that reached 35C, surpassing the old record from 1969 at 33.3C.

The hot weather is expected to stick around for the rest of the week, with temperatures reaching 36C in Kelowna and Vernon on Monday, 35C in Kamloops.

The UV index will be 8 or very high, and residents are reminded to apply sunscreen, cover up and avoid being in direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours.
