  • New project ‘Okanagan Flood Story’ launches informative website

The Okanagan Water Board launched a project years in the making on Wednesday morning.

Titled “Okanagan Flood Story”, the informative website is aimed at aiding residents and local governments better understand flood concerns.

With data dating back 200 years, users will be able to access flood maps, historical information, climate change perspectives and helpful risk reduction tips, Okanagan residents are encouraged pay attention to the site as flood season fast approaches.

The interactive website is a funded $2.5-million project that took over two years to produce, dating back to the region's record flooding in 2017.

“We’re very excited to see this launch, which happens to coincide with Emergency Preparedness Week,” said OBWB Executive Director Anna Warwick Sears.

“Flooding is part of the Okanagan’s history, but we’ve long talked about the need for new flood maps, at the Water Board table and at local government tables as well. These maps are important to help residents, planners, developers and others, make the best decisions possible, ensuring we minimize our flood risk.”
